Feedback
Decision Tree

Noun. A logical filter used to assess the validity of constructive feedback. It guides the receiver through a sequence of checks—primarily trust and alignment—to decide whether to integrate or discard an insight.

Motive Assessment
Do I trust the motives of the person who delivered the feedback? This is the root of the tree, separating helpful intent from unhelpful noise.

Result: Strategic Filtering.

Goal Alignment
Does the feedback align with my personal values and professional goals? If yes, we proceed; if no, we seek external validation before acting.

Result: Authentic Integration.

Breaking the Negativity Bias

Constructive feedback often triggers our biological survival mechanisms. As humans, we suffer from an ancient negativity bias that causes us to latch onto thoughts of inadequacy when challenged. The Feedback Decision Tree provides a logical structure to quiet this inner chatter, allowing the receiver to assess the data rather than simply reacting to the emotion.

The 6Ps of Processing

The decision tree is a key component of a broader methodology for feedback literacy. To use it effectively, one must engage with the 6Ps of Processing Feedback:

  • Poise: Maintaining emotional stability during delivery.
  • Process: Categorizing the data using logical filters.
  • Positionality: Understanding the power dynamic at play.
  • Percolate: Allowing time for the insight to sit (see: Feedback Compost).
  • Proceed: Moving toward integration.
  • Perspective: Stepping back to see the feedback’s place in your evolution.

Taking Ownership

Often, givers merely shine a light on a weakness. It is the responsibility of the receiver to take that light and “spill it into the future,” illuminating a path toward change. The Decision Tree is a tool for self-governance; it reminds the receiver that they—and they alone—are in control of what happens next.

You are in control of which insights define your future.
